A Lesson Learned from Experience

Kelsey Reynolds

Warm beads of sweat dripped from his forehead. He could feel his heart begin to race. He kept his hands in his pockets and began to walk towards to door.

He knows the risk he is about to take. He knows the consequences.

Slowly he moves his eyes around the room, looking for anyone who could possibly stand in his way. After his eyes make it around the room, he locks them on the floor in front of him and begins to walk through the doors.

He thinks he is home free. He thinks he is safe.

A cold hand falls upon his shoulder and pulls him to a stop. A feeling of shock shoots through his body.

He knows he has just been caught. He knows the consequences.

No longer is he innocent, no longer is he guiltless.

His parents are called and lectures are given. He waits in the cold dark room. Thoughts run through his mind as they never had before. For once in his life he cannot predict the outcome of his stupidity. Finally, he is sent home without legal penalty, but family penalties lie ahead.

When he arrives home the disappointment fills the room. The air is so thick; you could cut it with a knife. After a long period of silence and starring, another long lecture begins.

He knows he has done wrong. He knows this will be carried with him forever.

Privileges are taken away, and the next few weeks of his life look dim, yet he doesn’t seem to mind. “Let this be a learning experience.” His father tells him continuously.

He knows the risk he took. He knows the consequences he deserves.

As thoughts come and go through his mind, only one truly sticks. “Wow. I will never do that again.”
